For those that travel by train, you'll know the rules, glum expression, zero interaction and fight for the smallest amount of space. Those that tinker with the rules are met with cynicism. Today I crossed the line. I was sitting minding my own business when a man got on the train carrying an enormous square suitcase. There was no chance he could get in the overhead storage area or in the luggage rack, therefore he wedged it next to himself in the aisle. In doing this he wedged me into my seat as well. If I was to abide by the rules, I should have ignored this or at most raised my eyes and tutted. But instead I looked up and said "I've been travelling on these trains for ages and have seen many people carrying musical instruments" He gave me a quizzical look. I continued "I've seen guitars, flutes, trumpets and even a double bass" His look moved to complete bewilderment, so I moved my gaze from him and to his giant case and asked "So how long have you been playing the piano?" Not even a flicker of amusement. Stick to the rules people, stick to the rules... |
